A very talented musician from the youtube and the jamirotalk forums, High Times had a lot of us Acid Jazz fans fooled for Toby Smith. For over a year, a lot of youtube followers swore he is Toby Smith, but he simply happens to be a very modest musician from Russia. Most of his content are bits and snippets lasting between 25 seconds to 2 minutes, but a lot of the material is absolutely golden. Completely authentic rare groove funk and acid jazz. High Times is definitely worth checking out. Hopefully he’ll surprise us with an album keepin’ it funky!
Night Five: Discotizer!!
A fantastic DJ from Cologne, Germany. Discotizer is a low-key hero of mine. He plays true house music. You know, the kind that’s actually soulful, groovin’, funky, jazzy! Not really what house music has become… which is the buzzy, electro, non-musical sound beats. Discotizer posts a new DJ Mix every week or 2 on average and they’re filled with wonderful material, both New and Old. Here’s one of his newer mixes:
Night Four: Deep Cruisin’
A little bit of deep house for you deep night timers. Wrote this track last October while living in San Francisco. Almost on the minimal side but there are some funky bass and chords goin’ on while maintaining that mellow loungy deep house feel. Keep it funky!

Album Revisit: Travelling Without Moving
Before moving on to the obscure gems, we should mark off a definitive classic. Travelling Without Moving by Jamiroquai is simply one of those fundamental and essential albums that belongs in every music lover’s collection. Jamiroquai is the type of band that has more or less become either a dying breed or practically extinct… the last of its kind. A band that is actually better live than in the studio. A group of musicians that understand each other and are musically, mentally, and emotionally on the same page. In the year of 2011, where most music is dominated by the usage and power of computers, it is a rarity to find a group of musicians that deliver a specific sound which no other band possesses.

String Quartet No. 1 – The Monkey Who Made Music
I composed this work roughly 2 years ago during my second year in music school. Originally, only the first of four movements was written and the title stemmed from my transition from being initially frustrated to eventually satisfied with my composition skill. Somehow I looked at that process as very primitive (going from being sad to happy so quickly) and “monkey” like. I personally and endearingly titled the piece, The Monkey Who Made Music as I looked at myself as.. a monkey! The subsequent 3 movements came shortly after as it felt fitting to elaborate more on my musical ideas.
Movement I: Idea
Movement II: Frustration
Movement III: Meditation
Movement IV: Realization

First DJ Mix post. A recently recorded live set consisting of groovin’ bass lines that move, jazzy fender rhodes chords, on top of classic house beats. Strings, horns, synths, and sweet vocals also included. A hand-picked selection of funky, soulful, loungy, disco house music. Keep it funky!
